Tuesday Talks 2011

Press Release – Tuesday Talks 2011

The seventh edition of the Tuesday Talks at the Acadian Museum, in Miscouche, will begin on July 5 and will run until August 9. Three of the presentations will be given in French and three in English. The talks start at 7:30 p.m.

The lives of Acadian mothers will be the theme of the first talk (in French) on July 5. Rose Arsenault, Marie Bernard, and Yvonne Doucette will recall the hard working lives that their mothers experienced raising large families in Egmont Bay, Mont-Carmel, and Rustico in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.

On July 12, the well-known Island historian David Weale will give a talk (in English) titled “Revelations: Looking at Old Photographs”. This talk, like the first one, is presented in conjunction with the photo exhibition “Island Acadian Women: Photos from 1880 to 1960″ presently on display at the Acadian Museum.

Acadian genealogy will be the topic of the July 19 talk. Speaking in French, genealogist Jean Bernard will explore the family history of a number of Acadian couples who got married on the Island in 1812. He will illustrate how those families moved around in the Atlantic region since the early years of Acadia.

On July 26, the guest lecturer will be Heather Irving, author of the recently published book “Andy’s”. In her talk (in English) titled “My Acadian Grandparents: Ida and Andy Perry”, she will recount stories about this well-known Summerside couple. Andy Perry was a restaurateur, a horse breeder and racer, a town councillor, and in his early years, a rum-runner.

Island historian Georges Arsenault will give an illustrated talk (in French) on August 2.
It will deal with the traditional “French dress” that some Acadian women wore on the Island until the early years of the 20th century.

“Growing up in Oyster Bed Bridge in the 1940s” will be the topic of the last talk (in English) on August 9. Clem Gallant will reminisce his young days in Rustico where he grew up in a large Acadian family surrounded by many aunts and uncles.

The Acadian Museum of P.E.I. is located in Miscouche on Route 2, 10 km west of Summerside. Following the talks, refreshments will be served. Admission is free, but donations will be appreciated. Information : (902) 432-2880.
